On January 12, 2005 the scientists working on the project titled "Experimental Manipulation of Entire Watersheds through BMPs: Nutrient Fluxes, Fate and Transport and Biotic Responses" convened at the State University of New York at Brockport. This was the third annual scientific workshop on the progress on the Conesus Lake watershed management project.

The working scientists on the project presented a series of talks. The presentations targeted the progress since the inception of the project in August of 2002. Copies of the Powerpoint presentations given are linked below (Caution - some files are large):
Principal Investigator Dr. Joseph Makarewicz, of SUNY Brockport, opened the workshop and presented information on the status of the project. He also highlighted the presentation he wil give to the CREES National Water Quality Program Conference in San Diego, Ca on February 8, 2004.
Nate Herendeen of Cornell Cooperative Extension updated us on the current status of our BMP's and the changes in agricultural practices in our experimental watersheds.
Mark Schuster , the Supervisor of the Town of Sparta and long-time dairy farmer spoke about the relationship between the agricultural community and the Conesus Lake residents. He also added some insight on how this project is perceived by the agricultural community.
Nancy Glazier of Cornell Cooperative Extension presented on the Outreach Brochure that will be circulating throughout
Dr James Zollweg of SUNY Brockport outlined the use of a menu-based web system for the dissemination of the project's data. He also introduced a web-based interactive mapping program (ARC IMS) that we may consider for our web site.
Yan Li, a graduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, spoke on the modeling of water movement in Conesus Lake using the ALGE hydrodynamic model.
Ted Lewis of SUNY Brockport presented on the intensive monitoring of the seven sub-watersheds of Conesus Lake and provided data on the impact the project's BMP's are having on their water chemistry.
Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Isidro Bosch of SUNY Geneseo presented results of his studies of Eurasian milfoil beds and their association with streams and his work with metaphyton.
Dr. Robert Simon of SUNY Geneseo presented on the impact the project's BMP's are having on the microbiology of the streams.
Jason Somarelli, a recent graduate student at SUNY Brockport, presented his thesis work on identification of E. coli sources in the Conesus Lake Watershed.
Sarah Wasson, the graduate research assistant on this project from SUNY Brockport, presented her proposed research on identification of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in our watersheds.
A detailed discussion followed which centered on the issues of progress, goals for the end of the project, the dissemination of information generated from the project, interim reports and submitting a proposal for renewal of the project.
The general consensus of the workshop was one of general satisfaction. The evidence is mounting that the Best Management Practices implemented as part of this project are beginning to bear fruit and show significant improvements to water quality, bacterial levels, and biota in the downstream ecosystem. The hope is that this prioject will be renewed so that we can continue to track the improvements in the watershed.
